The newest children's lifestyle store to open in Sydney's Sutherland Shire is Love by Five. The store is giving locals a new place to find all their favourite brands (think: Bandit Kids, Zuitton, Lacey Lane, Mini Melissa, Sweet Child of Mine, Homely Creatures, Flatout Frankie....and on and on) well as lots of new fab finds. The store front is at 12 Marshall Road, Kirrawee (located next to Baked Patisserie - fab for coffee and cronuts!) and has plenty of parking (and space for prams). For those of you out of the area, the good news is their online store is now up and running. Check it out!
I sat down with the owners (and sisters) Shannon Dowling and Brooke Clarke to find out more information about their beautiful little store and what is coming up for the new store.
How would you describe your style?
We definitely tend to go for a more ‘street’ style of clothing for the kids when we are buying. We love the fact a lot of the clothing in store is unisex. We love anything that is quirky and slightly left of centre!
How did opening Love by Five come about?
After both working in retail for what seemed like forever, we decided we wanted to take the leap and open our own store. We had always loved 'playing shops' as kids, and now we get to do it everyday! Since having our kids we always had a passion for the children’s industry (we spend more on our kids than ourselves!) once we finally made the huge decision to open Love By Five was born.
What is the inspiration behind the name Love by Five?
We are sisters and between us we have 5 kids - Levi, Riley, Archie, Summer and Willow. When we were coming up with a name we wanted it to have some meaning behind it, not just a random name that popped into our head. We threw around so many ideas, Love x Five was one we both loved, but we liked the way ‘by’ sounded instead of ‘times’ so Love By Five it was!
What the best thing about owning your own store?
The fact we can both bring our own ideas and loves into the store for everyone to enjoy. We also love the social aspect of having a chat with our customers when they pop in, and catching up on their kiddies and day to day lives. The thing we love most is bringing brands and products into the local area that haven’t previously been readily available, brands that were really only available online. We found we were always shopping online so wanted one place in the shire to get them all!
What is a typical day in the store like?
At the moment we still have a lot of stock arriving, so we are mostly unpacking and rearranging the shop to fit it all in! We love to change the shop around all the time so it looks new and fresh for customers visiting. The idea behind some of the furniture we bought was so we could change the layout of the shop whenever we like. You can usually find us eating Cronuts and drinking coffee from Baked Patisserie next door and having a chat with our lovely customers!
What are your favourite items in the store at the moment or is that like choosing a favourite child?
Brooke: The Donsje shoes we brought in from Amsterdam, they’ve been hugely popular, and we can’t wait for you to see the new styles arriving for winter.
Shannon: The range from Bebe De Pino would have to be ONE of my favourites (it is hard to choose) but I love the quirkiness of the brand.
What trends are you loving? And what is arriving in store soon that is exciting you?
Brooke: I love embracing the unisex aspect of children’s fashion, with brands like Bandit Kids and Sweet Child of Mine, I also like non seasonal items.
Shannon: I love brands that like to push the envelope, like Bebe De Pino and Sack Me. Brands that may not appeal to everyone but make a strong statement. I love the way Sack Me mix and match with bright colours and bold patterns, whilst I’ve loved the monochrome trend, I feel that it’s had it’s day, and next will be colourful, fun patterns.
What’s next for Love by Five?
Oh so many things! We’ll continue to find new and original brands, trends and products for our store, it’s what we love to do! We have lots of other things in store for you all but it’s a surprise!
